Lawyer Adila Hassim laid out five features of Israel’s “genocidal conduct” in Gaza at Thursday’s hearing.
Killings: Since South Africa first appeared before the ICJ in January, she said, at least 11,500 Palestinians have been “directly killed by Israel”, the majority of them women and children.
Humanitarian catastrophe: Israel has created a humanitarian crisis in a “coordinated” way, she said, stopping food and aid from entering the enclave while stopping the chronically sick and injured from getting out.
Crippling of Gaza’s medical system: Israel’s offensive on Rafah has further crippled Gaza’s health system, forcing most health facilities to shut down.
Mass graves: In its targeted attacks on hospitals, Israel has killed hundreds of civilians, including doctors and medical staff, turning centres for healing into mass graves full of the decomposing bodies of men, women and children.
Attacks in Gaza’s north: An area Israel reported that it had cleared many months ago. At least 100,000 people, she said, had been forced to flee their devastated homes while Israel has begun a relentless assault on Rafah.
