In a deadly escalation of violence, over 100 people have been killed in a series of Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, according to local sources. The strikes, which began late last night and continued into the early hours of the morning, targeted various sites across southern Lebanon, including residential areas and infrastructure linked to Hezbollah, a key player in the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the air strikes were in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah, which they claim has intensified in recent days. “We are acting in self-defence and will continue to target military installations and groups posing a threat to Israeli civilians,” the IDF spokesperson said.

However, Lebanese officials have condemned the strikes as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. “This is a clear act of aggression that targets civilians and critical infrastructure,” said Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, calling for international intervention to prevent further casualties.

Rescue teams are still working to retrieve bodies from the rubble, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of wounded individuals. Several areas in southern Lebanon have been left without electricity, and access to basic services has been severely disrupted.

International reactions have been swift, with the United Nations and regional powers urging restraint. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for an immediate ceasefire, warning that the situation could spiral into a broader regional conflict. Meanwhile, Arab League leaders have convened an emergency meeting to address the crisis.

This latest episode of violence comes amid growing tensions in the region, exacerbated by long-standing disputes over territorial sovereignty, Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon, and Israeli security concerns. Analysts warn that, without diplomatic intervention, the conflict could further destabilise the region.
