Phyllis Bennis, an analyst at the Institute for Policy Studies, told Al Jazeera that it is unlikely the war will end with “Israeli initiative anytime soon”.
“Netanyahu’s political survival, his get-out-of-jail-card, if you will, depends on the war continuing forever,” Bennis said.
This is unlikely to change unless there is “significant pressure from the United States, in the form of cutting off the money and the weapons that are enabling this war and this genocide to continue”, she added.
Despite antigovernment protests in Israel, most Israelis still support Netanyahu’s plan to continue the war after the captives are released, Bennis said.
