The Israeli military had determined that there were 20-30 Hamas fighters in the UN-run school it attacked in Nuseirat, according to spokesperson Peter Lerner.
Many of those fighters were killed in the air attack, according to Lerner, without providing evidence.
He said he was not aware of civilian casualties.
As we’ve been reporting, 40 people have been killed and dozens wounded in the attack on the school, where hundreds of displaced Palestinians were sheltering, and adjoining houses.
Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from the hospital, said a large number of women, children and the elderly were among the victims.
