As of May 2021, the Irish parliament has made a significant step towards recognizing the State of Palestine. On May 26, 2021, the Dáil (the lower house of the Irish parliament) voted to approve a motion recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehood, thereby recognizing Palestine as a state. This makes Ireland the first EU member state to pass such a motion.

This motion was tabled by the Sinn Féin party and received wide support across various political parties. The decision reflects Ireland’s strong stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its support for a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders. The motion also condemned what it described as Israel’s “de facto annexation” of Palestinian land.
